Match Report

Bury 2 Bournemouth 5
Nationwide League Division 2
Saturday 21st October 2000

On a bizarre afternoon, Burys defenders gifted Bournemouth goals in comedy fashion, as the Shakers lost their third game inside a week, conceding 10 goals in the process, this despite having let in only 7 goals in the previous 11 games !

Teenager James Hayter was the beneficiary of some appalling lapses, netting a second half hattrick in six minutes to add to his first half goal. But incredibly, at the other end Bury still squandered enough chances to have won, even when 1-5 down. Former Burnley favourite Paul Barnes was given a torrid time by the Gigg Lane faithful, missing the chance to win over the critics spurning several opportunities, whilst Cherries goalkeeper Stewart made a series of fine saves.

Eight or nine apiece would have been a fair reflection of a chaotic game in which Paddy Kenny prevented the Cherries from scoring more but it was left to the Management duo of Steve Redmond and Andy Preece to be the goalscorers for Bury, which must itself create a record of some sort! Preece has much to do before Reading are the visitors on Tuesday night.
