Match Report
Peterborough United 1 Bury 1 Nationwide League Division 2 Saturday 2nd September 2000
After an indifferent first half showing which left them trailing to a Francis Green goal on half an hour, Bury returned to somewhere near their recent form in the second period to salvage a deserved share of the spoils at London Road.
Even then though, the display fell short of the high standards the Shakers have set themselves in the opening weeks of the season, and only Darren Bullock's equaliser preserved their undefeated away record after previous wins at Cambridge and Rotherham.
Yet had a spell of pressure in the opening quarter of an hour led to a goal, the outcome of the match could have been very different, as Bury took the game to their hosts with three corners and a barrage of efforts on goal - Peterborough still suffering the effects of a 2-0 home reverse against Swansea City it seemed. First Chris Billy curled a shot wide of the upright, then Baichung Bhutia scraped the woodwork again with a clever flick, before Chris Swailes nodded a Paul Reid corner into the path of the Indian international who had held back on the edge of the box in order to fire in a shot, blocked though by a United defender.
Peterborough reacted to this series of close scrapes in positive fashion and as Bury's midfield was carved open by David Farrell and Ritchie Hanlon, Posh's backlash ended with a Francis Green opener on 30 minutes - Chris Swailes seeing Andy Clarke sweep the ball off his toe before setting up Green to shoot in from a tight angle. And United went on to dominate the remainder of the first half too, as Patrick Kenny kept out Andy Edwards' towering header with a stunning reaction save down low to his right.
After his winner on Bank Holiday Monday against Northampton Town at Gigg Lane, it was Darren Bullock again who was on the Shakers scoresheet when he met Paul Reid's 72nd minute corner kick with a header at the near post to draw Bury level, the set-piece a result of a Nick Daws free kick which Mark Tyler tipped over the crossbar.
